Outdoor Tap Threads: A Guide for Smart Garden Irrigation & Watering
When setting up a smart irrigation timer, make sure it matches your outdoor tap’s thread size. Adapters are available, but it’s easier and usually more reliable to choose a timer that fits your tap straight out of the box.
Common Outdoor Tap Thread Sizes
Thread Type | Size | Used In |
---|---|---|
BSP (British Standard Pipe) | 3/4″ BSP (26.5mm OD) | UK and European outdoor garden taps (most common) |
BSP | 1/2″ BSP (20.9mm OD) | Older or wall-mounted taps |
GHT (Garden Hose Thread) | 3/4″ GHT | Many US smart timers (Orbit, RainPoint etc.) |
Identifying and Matching Threads
- Measure the outside diameter of your tap’s thread:
- 3/4″ BSP = approx. 26.5mm
- 1/2″ BSP = approx. 20.9mm
- Check your timer’s inlet — is it BSP or GHT
- If they don’t match, you’ll need an adapter.
Using Adapters
- BSP to GHT adapter: Allows a US made timer to fit a UK \ Eurpean garden tap.
- 1/2″ to 3/4″ BSP adapter: Used when your tap is smaller than the timer fitting.
- Available in brass or plastic, often sold in garden centres or online.
Tip: Use a washer or apply PTFE tape to ensure a watertight seal.
Summary
- UK & European taps are usually 3/4″ BSP male
- US timers: often 3/4″ GHT female
- Use the correct adapter to bridge the two
